Night Traffic

Shortly after I bought my digital camera I went out at night to try some long exposure ‘light trail’ shots. This was about the best from that night, and, somewhat annoyingly, about the best from any subsequent attempts.

  1. I did some low light photography like this, and whilst I’m no expert, and don’t know exactly what settings you used, you might want to consider the following things:

    - Use a smaller apperture, helps reduce the effect of low light emissions.

    - Use a black piece of card to cover the lens when there are no or too few cars around. Obviously this means holding the shutter open for longer, but should be a problem if you have a manual cable release.

    - Different location. I think one of your problems with that particular location is that there are so many street lights. Of course this really is dependant on the type of final image that you are after.

I ended up parking up in a layby along the A2 and got a mixture of results, including some where you own see the headlights and taillights of the cars/lorrys.

  2. Thanks for the tips mate :)

I might be a bit strange but I kind of liked the orangey hue from the lights. I’m itching to try it out at a darker spot with the black card now though :)

  3. I’ve got a story that includes the phrase:

“I ended up parking up in a layby along the A2 and got a mixture of results”

    but it’s not about photography…
