The big day is approaching fast, and whilst Mary and I feel like we should be stressed beyond belief, rushing round every waking moment, organising widgets, doofers, flidlets and gooblies we are actually quite chilled. I suppose the fact that we don’t actually know what things we should be organising should tell us something. We didn’t, for example, know that your wedding was supposed to have a ‘theme’ – we thought ‘Wedding’ would be our theme, but apparently that’s not good enough. Of course, us being us, we started listing themes we might like… Country and Western? Star Wars (I’d quite like to reverse tradition and have me stride up the aisle to the opening bars of the Imperial March…)? Vicars and tarts (hmm – possibly not)? I suspect the nice lady asking us what our theme was was actually trying to find out about colours, or something – but it seems you never really know.
This is not to say we’ve not been quite extravagant, but I like to think we’ve shelled out on the things that are important to us, rather than the things that the glossy mags say should be important to us. The dress, the photographer, the reception – all things I don’t begrudge paying the money for. Wedding cars, on the other hand, are a big fat rip off, so we aren’t having one. Favours? Doing our own thanks. Flowers? Mary finally managed to find a florist who would actually listen to what she wanted rather than hearing “Wedding” and seeing the £ signs.
Now, being chilled about one of the biggest days of your life is undoubtedly a good thing. It does leave us worrying slightly though. What is everyone else doing at this point? You hear stories of plans being made and remade right up to the morning of the day. We’re not that organised (as anyone who’s ever met one of us will attest!), so what have we forgotten? Church, rings, dress, suits, reception, cake, honeymoon all done. What huge, humungous, vitally important thing is missing?
Dammit – I’m not so chilled now!
You know, I found that I was pretty relaxed too before I got married. I think the reason for this was two-fold.
1) It was something that I wanted to do so why should I be nervous or worried
and
2) I wasn’t allowed to be in charge of organising anything.
These are the secrets to a stress-free wedding.
Sounds good to me.
Oh, who am I kidding? I’m just here testing the comments on this new WordPress install…
